J Grades are the method which Brisbane Hockey Association manages teams of the Under 15's and Under 17's age groups. The boys within this age range form club based teams and compete on a grading rather than age basis.
There can be up to four level of J competition in any one season, dependent upon player numbers and competiveness. The J4 is the entry level grade and J1 the highest level Grade. It is not uncommon for boys to enter the J grade competition in a lower J Grade and work up over the ensuing seasons to the higher level of both skill and often, age.
All J Grade competitions are played on Turf pitches. There is a turf pitch (water based) at Burringbar Park, Chermside; one (sand Based) pitch at Redcliffe; two (water based) pitches at the State Hockey Centre, Colmslie; and a new pitch (water based) at Carina. The location of these playing venues can be found here.
Competitions usually run from late March until early September each season, with registration usually taking place in early February. Training commences shortly thereafter.
