The Tomahawk is Reintroduced for 2010
Commencing the 2010 Season, the field hockey shot known as the "Tomahawk" will be allowed in the Brisbane Hockey Association Competition. Please note, the shot will ONLY BE ALLOWED from Under 13's and older Grades.
The shot, whilst a matter of controversy in some circles, and not allowed for younger age groups, is however a very useful shot in certain situations.
The Tomahawk is defined in the Online Wikipedia as "a type of hit where the hockey stick is turned so that the rounded side faces the ground and then swung in such a way that it hits the ball in a downward chopping motion"
As the shot is allowed in cometition from the 2010 Season forward, all players, familiar with the shot or not, need to learn how to use it. Even more importantly, they need to learn how to defend against it and manage themselves when they are around such shots being taken.
If you are unsure about aspects of the Tomahawk, ask your coach.
The video below is a great example of a high value Tomahawk shot, performed by Australia's own Jamie Dwyer.
